Baby brain is an annoying part of being a new parent. The sleep deprivation, hormones (for mums), and new tasks that you need to do, build up and the brain just can’t keep it all in. You have to remember the last time you changed your baby, when she was fed and the length of her naps! While you could write it all down, technology makes it easier with baby logging apps.
There are many different logging apps, including Baby Connect for the iPhone and Android phones and Baby Nursing/ Breast Feeding for the iPhone.
The Benefits of Using Technology for Logging Everything
Technology makes your life so much easier. You could write it all down but then you would have to remember to take it with you and pass it onto your partner or a childminder. With the apps, everything is there at the touch of a button. Most people don’t go anywhere without their phone, so it is one less thing to remember.
These logging apps will keep track of everything you need, from the time of the last feed to the number of nappies used during the day. With Baby Nursing/Breast Feeding everything is there at a glance. There is no need to search through hundreds of notes to find out when the next visit with the doctor is or whether your baby has had enough to eat. The information is separated into easy to use categories and it even tracks which breast you used for feeding.
Baby Connect creates graphs and charts to offer an easy way to see all the information. It easily shows you the amount your baby is eating and the length of time she sleeps at each nap to make sure she gets enough rest. This is also a great way to spot any strange occurrences so you can talk to your doctor about them.
The benefit of notes is the ability to pass them between parents and childminders. The apps allow you to send the information via email so that everyone has the up-to-date information. They can then use their own trackers or loggers to send back to you.
The Limitations of the Baby Trackers
One of the biggest problems is that you need battery power. With pen and paper, you can quickly grab and go. The trackers will use up battery power and you need to make sure you have enough, whether you are timing a feed or making note of a new nap. Some of the free apps can take up a lot of battery power because of the adverts that are added to fund them. It is important to keep your phone well charged to avoid any problems.
Some apps aren’t designed for those with multiple babies. This can lead to either having to use two apps, or track one baby on paper if they are both feeding at the same time. Others are specifically designed for more than one baby, which leads to confusing graphs and more functions than you really need. This is often a trial and error process to find the right one.
Not all the apps are free. In fact, there are very few that are free. At a time when money is going to be tight, it may be worth buying a journal that you can write everything down in and make sure it is somewhere easy to reach.
Baby Tracking Apps: Monitoring Your Newborn
Baby tracking apps do make it easier to track your newborn. They offer the information in a way that is easy to view and allows you to include all the detail that you could possibly need. The main downside is your battery power but as long as you keep your phone charged, it shouldn’t be a major issue – keep a notebook with you, though, just in case.
